CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Hey, Ren. How's your knee?” Liza popped her head around Adrienne's bedroom door.

“Hi, Liza. A little tender, but the swelling has gone down now. I can walk on it fine.” She set her book aside. “Are you alright?”

“I guess. I'll be sad to leave here, but nothing lasts forever, right?” Liza sighed, edging further into the room.

“No, it doesn't. Any plans for your last night?”

“Rochelle and the girls have asked if I fancy the night club again tonight. One last blow out before the humdrum of life kicks back in tomorrow. Do you feel up for it?”

“Ah, I don't have the best experience with night clubs.” Adrienne smiled. “I think I'll wander down to the Taverna, say goodbye to Da.”

“Oh, okay. Well, the boys won't be with us, if that's what you're worried about. You were right about them, a bunch of idiots.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah,” Liza said, scuffing her barefoot against the plush carpet. “Turns out Deano is like the rest of them, only after one thing. I'd explained about Marcus and he said he understood, but...” She trailed off. “Never mind. Look, why I don't head down with you for a drink at Da's place first, then I can meet the girls at the club later.” She asked, hesitant.

After her outburst in the Taverna the other night, Liza had been shamefaced. They hadn't talked about it, nor did Adrienne want to. She was getting tired of all the emotional upheavals.

“Sounds like a plan.”

“Great” Liza brightened. “I'll run you a bath, shall I? Soak your knee before we go. Oh, that old nanny of yours has been by with some herbal thing to rub on it. I’ll leave it in the bathroom.” She called, dashing out the room before Adrienne could say anything. If this was her way to make amends, Adrienne wasn't going to complain.

After burying her body in a huge fluffy towel, Adrienne took her time going back to her room. The warm water had done the trick in loosening the tightness in her knee, but it would need a moment to settle down.

Whatever was in that herbal mix Nefeli had left was working wonders. Adrienne made a mental note to write to her once home and encourage her to sell her natural remedies but wondered if she would see the woman again. They’d promised to keep in touch, yet she knew how quickly life could take a turn. She was certain there was a lot of life left in Nefeli, despite her age.

Stepping gingerly into her room, she found Liza riffling through her wardrobe, discarded dresses slung across the bed. The drawers on her dresser were pulled open, lip gloss and jewellery scattered across the wooden top.

“Liza? What are you doing?”

“Oh! Ren, goodness, I didn't hear you!” She turned, one hand pressed to her chest, hanger in the other. “I wanted to borrow something, I can't find anything I want to wear in mine and you always look beautiful. I wondered if I could wear this? It's still got the label on; you've not worn it yet.
